Here a few Questions to Maria Guleghina,
Did you always want to become an opera singer?
- No, I wanted to become a ballerina, but my father was not too excited about this.
What is your favourite Opera?
- There are too many, actually I love every single Opera I sing. Every Role has a character of its own and in order to perform the role well, I become the character I am performing. I could not sing the role if I did not like it.
How do you prepare for a role?
-There is no special recipe, I research! I read the libretto, I speak to my friends and family about the role, I read different books that involve the character that I am about to perform and I also view the existing videos of the opera productions. And of course I try to imagine who this personage I will portray is, but again, it is always a new approach, and there is no recipe to learn a role.
What do you dislike about your Job?
- Bad Productions meaning unmotivated and nonsense productions, productions that change the plot of the actual opera.
If you have not had the chance to work as an opera singer what would you have liked to become?
- A cook and a mother of 5. I still dream of opening a restaurant one day.
If you had the possibility to awaken 3 already dead musicians, who would they be and why?
- Carlos Kleiber: simply because he was a genius and it has always been my dream to work with him
- Verdi: because he was a composer who gave me the most in my life.
- Paganini: Would love to hear a real virtuoso. Nowadays so many violinists are compared with him that I would really like to bring him back to life and show the difference between a real virtuoso and a pseudo virtuoso and most of all a PR Product.
I feel very sorry for all the musicians/artists who are being compared to the new starlets.
What do you do in your free time?
- I love to cook and invite my friends over for dinner.
- I love to read and I even started to write something like a book, but I do not think that I will ever publish it , it is too personal.
Imagine you are stranded on an island, what would you like to have beside you (only material things)?
- Books, lots of books
- I would not take any food along - .this way I will lose weight!
- I would not take any music with me - the nature has beautiful music of its own.
- My laptop. (to play PC games on a rainy day)
What was the saddest day of your life?
- When my mother died.
What was the happiest day of your life?
- I have had so many, I can not tell you which one! Probably the birthdays of my two children.
You have a 5 year old son, how do you manage your career and your family life?
-Of course it is not easy. He used to travel with me most of the time, but now that he started school it does become more difficult. However, I have a great family that helps me manage both my career and the family life.
